About “FOWA”
“Floating Offshore Wind Asia (FOWA)” is an international symposium jointly organised by Renewable Energy Association for Sustainable Power Supply (REASP) and World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO) for the first time which aims to promote the commercial scale deployment of Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) projects in Asia including Japan. The symposium will bring together market leaders from all over the world to actively exchange insights on Floating Offshore Wind Power which is a key for achieving carbon neutrality, thereby contributing to the steady and sustainable development of the Floating Offshore Wind Power market.

Renewable Energy Association for Sustainable Power supply (REASP) is promoting renewable energy power generation projects and provide long-term stable supply regardless of the type of power source to contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality in Japan. We have also discussed measures to promote and expand the spread of offshore wind power generation, especially floating offshore wind, which is expected to have a market share in renewable energy.
We are pleased to announce that we will hold a symposium on floating offshore wind in Japan in collaboration with World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO), which promotes global and advanced initiatives related to offshore wind power. At the symposium, we will provide information and hold panel discussions on the possibilities and challenges of floating offshore wind power generation in Japan to share the experiences of advanced offshore wind in Europe and other countries, and promote networking among people related to offshore wind in Japan and overseas.
In Japan, large-scale offshore wind farm development has become active in recent years, and starting with the designation of promotion areas based on the Renewable Energy Sea Area Utilization Act, in September 2022, three new areas will be designated as promotion areas in addition to the previous five areas. The offshore wind power era has begun in Japan.
In addition, the construction of Japan's first commercial floating offshore wind farm is progressing, and discussions have begun on the development of domestic laws regarding the use of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Efforts to promote the spread of renewable energy are accelerating, and there are great expectations for it as an important means for the expansion of renewable energy in the future. Furthermore, the rise of the offshore wind power industry in Japan will lead to further development of the offshore wind power generation industry in the Asian region in the future.
Through this symposium, we would like to contribute to the promotion and expansion of the introducing of floating offshore wind farms in Japan and Asia in the future by actively interacting with people involved in floating offshore wind power generation around the world. -
World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO) is delighted to be a co-organising partner of the Renewable Energy Association for Sustainable Power Supply (REASP) in the upcoming conference on Floating Offshore Wind Asia (FOWA). REASP is uniquely positioned to host the FOWA event which builds on the leading work of REASP’s Working Group on floating offshore wind. WFO fully supports REASP in the ambition to foster the global exchange on floating offshore wind in order to accelerate the commercial-scale deployment of floating offshore wind in Japan and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Despite the challenges Japan's offshore wind market is facing at the moment, the country has a huge potential in becoming the global leader in Floating Offshore Wind as it showed in the past how quickly it is in catching up with new technologies and inventions.
FOWA will bring together leading industry representatives from around the world to discuss a wide range of crucial floating offshore wind topics including technology, finance, insurance, and environmental stakeholder management. As a co-organiser of FOWA WFO is honoured to be able to contribute the latest insights from the work undertaken by, especially its Floating Offshore Wind Committee (FOWC)* but also WFO’s wide range activities carried out with more than 100 international members intent to represent the whole supply chain in the offshore wind industry, to various program of this conference.
WFO is therefore very much looking forward to being part of this first FOWA event to be held in Tokyo and we sincerely thank our WFO member REASP for inviting us to be a part of this highly important event dedicated to floating offshore wind in Asia.
(*) FOWC is a forum consisting of four subcommittees (Insurance, Moorings, O&M and Cables & Floating Substations) and through monthly online gatherings, they identify the most relevant topics for the industry based on practical experience, feed into existing research & development efforts, and ultimately bring the industry forward.
